Title: The Research Landscape of User-generated Digital Information: Challenges and Possibilities

With the advent of social media, users have been transformed from being passive recipients to active producers of digital information. The resultant body of user-generated content which ranges from text and images to video, has spawn multiple lines of research inquiry. In this talk, three dominant themes, namely, sense-making, diffusion and user-information interaction will be highlighted. Along with tracing the research trajectory of each theme, I will identify the theoretical, methodological and practical challenges and shed light on the possibilities that lie ahead.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH (Click here for description)

Dr. Alton Chua is currently Associate Professor, and Associate Chair (Research) at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. His responsibilities of overseeing the research office in the School range from charting strategic directions and forging collaborative networks to administering competitive grants and analyzing research performance of faculty members. Title: Innovation in All Steps of Product Development

Product development is a lot more than having an idea. Many stages are needed and all offer innovation opportunities. There is a lot of focus on the creativity of the product concept and agreed that is critical. However, the opportunity for success lies in being innovative during the span from concept to product shipment to the end customer.

TEMS also looks at aspects with both the technology and management skills needed to “make it happen”. This presentation examines the overall problem of getting product from idea to market together with some case studies with different areas.

Michael is currently the President of the IEEE TEMS Society and a member of the International Advisory board for Tsinghua University in Beijing. Formally, Michael was the Chief Technical Officer for Intel Corporation, Client Division. His career has a mixture of academic and industry positions, mostly in industry. Holding teaching and research positions at Princeton and University of Illinois, at Illinois. Michael came to Intel from Sun to head up Networking Applications research in Intel Labs. Michael’s CTO role drove on customer innovation, design cost reduction, and other technologies and leading technical staff development. He led efforts to help the customer with system design and security. This plus efforts in technical staff development at Intel awarded him and his team the prestigious Intel Quality Award in 2015. His background includes projects in computer architecture, software, firmware, operating systems, networking, IoT, internet applications, standards, and computer security. Michael retired from Intel in June 2015.

Michael has patents in computer architecture and security. He has published many technical papers and regularly presents keynotes at technical conferences.

Michael is the President of the IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society (TEMS). Michael is a senior board member for the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES), he created and chairs the IEEE Industry Forum series that has successfully engaged industry in over 22 conferences. Michael is also a member of the IEEE Computer Society for over 29 years.
