Macau Tourism

Background

Macau is one of the world's most culturally diverse cities. When the Portugese arrived on the shores of Macau in the 16th century, they brought with them their own cultural, religious and culinary traditions. These Mediterranean influences have blended and co-existed peacefully with the local Chinese culture for more than four centuries. UNESCO-protected monuments of religious and political significance in "The Historic Centre of Macao" stand side-by-side as living testaments to the old Macau. Even as this city moves forward, it has preserved its rich, European architectural legacy for future generations to re-live the past as they walk along cobble-stoned paths and gaze up at centuries-old temples and churches.

Macau is located in Guangdong province, on the western bank of the Pearl River Delta, 38 miles from Hong Kong. Macau has approximately half million population and a total area of just 29 square km, comprising the Macau peninsula and the islands of Taipa and Coloane.
